Epithelial branching: the power of self-loathing.

چکیده
Branching morphogenesis of epithelia is an important mechanism in mammalian development. The last decade has seen the identification of many signalling pathways and intracellular mechanisms that control epithelial branching. Tissue-level mechanisms that space new branches out have, however, remained an unsolved problem. A recent publication by Nelson et al.1 suggests--if extrapolation from their novel and abstract culture system is valid--that branches may be spaced out by a system of mutual inhibition based on diffusion of TGFbeta. Such a system would allow a developing tree to arrange itself, without detailed genetic specification, by adaptive self-organization.

Australas Psychiatry Roy Krawitz Part 2 : self - compassion and other interventions
Objective: This article is the second in a series of two on the topic. The purpose of the article is to discuss the intervention of self-compassion (and briefly other behavioural interventions) in treating severe chronic self-loathing in people with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The first article focuses on interrupting the self-loathing cycle. Conclusions: Self-compassion has promise ...
متن کاملInhibitory morphogens and monopodial branching of the embryonic chicken lung.
BACKGROUND Branching morphogenesis generates a diverse array of epithelial patterns, including dichotomous and monopodial geometries. Dichotomous branching can be instructed by concentration gradients of epithelial-derived inhibitory morphogens, including transforming growth factor-β (TGFβ), which is responsible for ramification of the pubertal mammary gland. Here, we investigated the role of a...
متن کاملShape Self-Regulation in Early Lung Morphogenesis
The arborescent architecture of mammalian conductive airways results from the repeated branching of lung endoderm into surrounding mesoderm. Subsequent lung's striking geometrical features have long raised the question of developmental mechanisms involved in morphogenesis. Many molecular actors have been identified, and several studies demonstrated the central role of Fgf10 and Shh in growth an...
متن کاملIn Vitro Experimental Model for the Long-Term Analysis of Cellular Dynamics During Bronchial Tree Development from Lung Epithelial Cells
Lung branching morphogenesis has been studied for decades, but the underlying developmental mechanisms are still not fully understood. Cellular movements dynamically change during the branching process, but it is difficult to observe long-term cellular dynamics by in vivo or tissue culture experiments. Therefore, developing an in vitro experimental model of bronchial tree would provide an essen...
متن کاملThe Positive Negative Experience in Extreme Role-Playing
Fun is often seen a necessary gratification for recreational games. This paper studies two freeform role-playing games aiming to create extremely intense experiences of tragedy, horror, disgust, powerlessness and self-loathing, in order to gratify the self-selected group of experienced role-players. Almost all of the 15 interviewed players appreciated their experiences, despite crying, experien...
